Vision care that works on a phone. OptikosPrime develop refractive screening and prescription technologies for standard phones.

Why this matters

Vision care has not scaled.
More than a billion people globally live with uncorrected refractive error. In most cases, the solution is simple: glasses. The challenge is access.

Traditional vision care depends on specialised equipment, trained personnel, and fixed clinical infrastructure. That creates barriers across retail, healthcare systems, workplaces, schools, and underserved communities.Vision screening and prescription access should be as available as a phone.

What we build

VisionCheck. Refractive screening from a single phone photo. Built for high-volume screening across retail, workplaces, schools, and outreach programs.

Argus. Full eyeglass prescription estimation from a phone photo. Built for telehealth, online eyewear, and underserved regions.

Why we are different

We combine optics, photorefraction, and machine learning to derive refractive insights from phone images.

Unlike traditional vision systems, our platforms are built for deployment at scale without dedicated ophthalmic hardware.

About OptikosPrime

OptikosPrime is a Copenhagen-based vision technology company. Founded in 2020 by Anders Kofod-Petersen and Ståle Fredlund Husby, we build refractive screening and prescription tools that work on standard phones. Our research collaborators include NTNU, Karolinska Institutet, and Aalborg University. We deploy with Sightsavers across Africa and Asia.

Social impact

Most people with refractive error are never screened. Mobile screening can change that by removing the dependency on equipment and specialists. Our goal is to make refractive screening accessible globally.

Founders and advisors

Two founders, four senior advisors. Backgrounds span AI research, deep-tech operations, optical retail, clinical optometry, and global eye care.

Unlike traditional vision systems, our platforms are built for deployment at scale without dedicated ophthalmic hardware.

Our manifesto

We can have results, or excuses - not both

Culture manifesto

Description

Clarity Over Cleverness: We value straightforward communication. We're direct and to the point, avoiding jargon and unnecessary complexity.

Value Everyone's Time: We keep meetings focused and efficient, with clear agendas and thorough preparation, and prefer quick communication for internal matters.

Fact-Based Decisions:
We make decisions based on data and evidence, not opinions or gut feelings. We confront challenges directly and honestly.

Respectful Candor: We communicate directly and respectfully. We value active listening and allow others to finish their thoughts before contributing our perspective.

Engineering manifesto

Description

Measure twice, cut once: Invest time in research before making technical decisions. Choosing the right technologies is critical; don't simply default to what's familiar. Prioritise community-maintained solutions over writing excessive custom code.

Embrace Open Source: Evaluate new open-source projects on their merits, not just popularity. Contribute to the projects you use, engage with the maintainers, and always read the source code.

Minimise Complexity: Collaborate across the company to reduce engineering complexity. Clearly communicate the long-term costs of complexity and align product development with available technologies.

Write simple code: We write code that is easy to read, understand and maintain, it should do one thing and include comprehensive automated tests. This allows us to build robust systems and make changes confidently.
